Policy in Practice paves the way for new approaches to social tariff applicationsPolicy in Practice has contributed to the Fabian Society’s report analysing the impact of the poverty premium on utilities, food and other essential services. The report sets out how these sectors, regulators and the government have failed low income households. Deven Ghelani and Rory Ewan made recommendations on how to tackle this by increasing takeup of social tariffs through the use of benefit checks, calculators and application processes to allow individuals to seamlessly
apply for social tariffs when completing a benefits check. Our latest report, Missing Out 2024, revealed that £974 million in water social tariffs go unclaimed each year. Our work with the utility sectors aims to combat administrative complexity and provide a single route assessment through national statutory benefits and discretionary schemes. Speaking this month at a talk hosted by the Quaker Social Action
group, Tylor-Maria Johnson presented alongside our partners at Northumbrian Water Group on the landscape in relation to water rates, including how they're calculated and the support available. Northumbrian’s partnership with Anglian Water has allowed customers with both organisations to complete a one click, single application to apply for social tariffs for both. As a result both the customer’s sewerage and
water bills will automatically be on the right tariff without the customer needing to duplicate applications, improving the experience for customers and customer service teams in both organisations alike.
